BACH Michel
chef de projet
CNES
Michel Bach, INGENIEUR AU CNES,

2006.

BARNOSKE Steven
President
MEADS International
MEADS International Names Steven Barnoske As Next President

The MEADS International Board of Directors has announced that Steven Barnoske will become president of MEADS International, the international joint venture that is developing the next generation of ground-mobile air and missile defense systems for the U.S., Germany and Italy. Barnoske succeeds Jim Cravens, who retires from Lockheed Martin after five years as president of MEADS International. MEADS is the 21st century replacement for Patriot air and missile defense systems in the United States and Germany, and for the Nike Hercules system in Italy.

Barnoske has directed tactical missiles programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control since 2005. He also served as director of the Joint Common Missile program, where he was responsible for all development activities, including the missile, launchers and platform integration. He served earlier as tactical missiles technical director and held diversified technical management positions on several tactical missile development and production, including Hellfire and Javelin. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and a Master of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Central Florida.

Cravens guided the MEADS program through a successful system prototype demonstration in Italy in 2004, a successful System Requirements Review in 2005 and the successful Preliminary Design Review in 2007. He is also credited with initiating a successful Critical Design Review event series that positions the MEADS program for a comprehensive integration and test phase. He will retain close ties to the program.

"Throughout his career, Jim Cravens has demonstrated a commitment to improving air and missile defense and to successful development of the next-generation MEADS system," said Dr. Walter Stammler, Chairman of the MEADS Board of Directors. "We thank him for his leadership throughout the Design and Development program and wish him well as he retires."

MEADS is a mobile Air and Missile Defense System that will incorporate the hit-to-kill PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) Missile in a system that includes 360-degree surveillance and fire control sensors, netted-distributed battle management/communication centers and high-firepower launchers. The system will combine superior battlefield protection with extensive flexibility, allowing it to protect maneuver forces and critical assets against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft.

MEADS will provide capabilities beyond any other
fielded or planned air and missile defense system. It will be easily deployed to a theater of operations and once there, will keep pace with fast-moving maneuver forces. MEADS will provide an open architecture for 21st century air and missile defense system-of-system integration capabilities that allow operational mission-tailoring. MEADS will also provide greater firepower with less manpower than current systems, producing dramatic operation and support cost savings.

A multinational joint venture headquartered in Orlando, FL, MEADS International's participating companies are MBDA in Italy, LFK in Germany and Lockheed Martin in the United States. Today, 1800 employees from these companies are completing final engineering designs for MEADS program, which is closely watched as a model for collaborative transatlantic development.

The United States funds 58 percent of the MEADS program, and European partners Germany and Italy provide 25 percent and 17 percent respectively as partners in the NATO Medium Extended Air Defense System Management Organization (NAMEADSMO). Its program management agency NAMEADSMA is located in Huntsville, AL.

BARTON Captain Lynn 51 ans
pilot
British Airways
Captain Lynn Barton will be the first pilot to fly into Heathrow’s Terminal 5 when it opens for business on Thursday morning (March 27).

Lynn, who previously earned her place in British Airways’ history as its first woman pilot, will be commanding BA026 from Hong Kong, which is scheduled to be the first arrival at the airline’s new £4.3bn home.

Lynn applied to operate the flight last month while she was on holiday in Barbados. She said “It was my husband’s idea to bid for the flight, but the timing meant I had to tear myself off the beach and find a computer so that I could apply through the airline’s flight- bidding system. I never thought I’d be in with a chance of actually getting the flight.”

“I found out when I got back from my holiday and was absolutely thrilled. Terminal 5 has been the focus of the airline’s future for several years now, and to operate the very first flight is a huge honour. I can’t wait,” she said.

Lynn, now 51, became British Airways’ first female pilot in 1987 when she joined the Boeing 747 fleet. Eight years earlier, she had been the first woman to be sponsored by the airline for her commercial pilot’s training at Hamble in Hampshire.

“I never thought of being anything other than a pilot when I was growing up. I had my very first flying lesson at the age of 16. I was incredibly proud to have been British Airways’ first ever woman pilot and now I have another first to my name!”

The new terminal building, which is for the exclusive use of British Airways customers, is more than five times the size of Terminal 4, and will give customers a much calmer, more relaxing and smoother airport experience.

“I’m already planning my passenger announcement for the first ever landing at Terminal 5. I want to make sure that I mark the occasion so that every one of my passengers can be part of history too.”

Since Lynn became the first female BA pilot in 1987 the number has risen dramatically and there are now 175 females among BA’s 3,200 pilots, which is significantly higher than the national average.

Lynn is not the only member of her family with a passion for flying. Her husband, Mike, has a private pilot’s licence and is currently building a new two-seater aircraft in their garage. Lynn said: “I don’t have a private licence any more so poor Mike has a very knowledgeable, but nagging co-pilot when we fly together.”

They live near Alton, Hampshire. Lynn, has a stepdaughter currently expecting her second child.
